One
of the most exciting new areas of computer research is virtual reality. Virtual
reality is an ambitious new style of computer interface. It straddles the foggy
boundary between fantasy and fact. Virtual reality creates the illusion of
being in an artificial world — one created by computers. Virtual reality
visitors strap on a set of eye phones, 3-D goggles, that are really individual
computer screens for the eyes. Slipping on the rest of the gear allows you to
enjoy not only seeing and hearing, but also sensing your voyage. One may call
the world of virtual reality cyberspace, that computer-enhanced fantasy world
in which you feel like moving around and manipulating objects to your mind’s
content.
On
moving your head, magnetic sensors instruct the computer to refocus your eye
phones to some new viewpoint. Sounds surround you, and a fiber-optic glove
allows you to “manipulate” what you see. Virtual reality lets you travel to
places you’ve never seen, do things you’ve never done – without leaving your
room.
For
the disabled, virtual reality promises a new form of freedom. After putting on
special equipment wheelchair bound paraplegics can fancy themselves playing
basketball or football. Some researches are funded by the government and take a
military point of view investigating the possibility of sending robots into the
real conflict while human beings guide them from back in the lab.
It
was the US military department that put forward the idea of creating 99%
acceptable virtual reality. They thought of connecting a computer to human’s
brain and clipping the images from that man’s experience for someone else.
American scientists consider it possible to use the calculations and data
processing of the cortex. By the way, the process of seeing, hearing, smelling
and feeling the world is just a branch of electric signals that enter the
brain.
One
may come to a frightening conclusion that we are now reaching the point at that
the simulations are so realistic that the line between playing the game or a
simulation and actually blowing people up is becoming blurred
